Historically, Goa was a Portuguese colony for over 450 years, from 1510 until 1961, which has left a lasting impact on its culture, architecture, and cuisine. The Portuguese influence is evident in the state's numerous churches, old buildings, and its distinct blend of Indian and European culinary traditions. Notable landmarks include the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Se Cathedral, which is one of the largest churches in Asia. Goa's festivals, such as Carnival and the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, reflect its unique cultural amalgamation.

Economically, Goa relies heavily on tourism, which significantly contributes to its GDP. The state is also known for its agriculture, particularly rice and cashew cultivation, and its fishing industry. Additionally, mining, especially of iron ore, plays an important role in Goa's economy. The state's laid-back lifestyle, warm climate, and scenic landscapes make it a prime destination for both relaxation and adventure activities like water sports, trekking, and wildlife exploration.
