Why go to Yusmarg
Yusmarg is a long meadow in the Pir Panjal foothills, reached from Srinagar through Budgam and Charar-e-Sharief. The Doodh Ganga runs below it and the forest closes in on every side.
The classic outing is the walk to Nilnag, a small green lake in the pines, about an hour each way. Fitter walkers can go on to the higher meadows with a local guide. For a longer, wilder road, our quiet valleys loop carries on from here to Daksum and Sinthan Top.
What to see
The forest walk to Nilnag lake
The Doodh Ganga below the meadow
Charar-e-Sharief shrine on the way
Pony rides across the meadow
Longer day hikes with a local guide
Local tip
Stay a night if you can. The tourist huts are simple, but the meadow at dusk, after the day visitors leave, is the best of Yusmarg.
A week in the meadows most visitors skip. Two quiet valleys in Budgam, the forest at Daksum and the high road over Sinthan Top, ending on a Srinagar houseboat.
