General Information About Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is one of the worlds most spectacular tropical island systems. Thirty- two sq. km of land spread over 36 islands surrounded by 4200 sq. km of lagoon rich in marine wealth. The precious heritage of ecology and culture is supported by an extremely fragile ecosystem. Committed to the cause of Eco tourism Union Territory of Lakshadweep has consciously followed a middle path between tourism promotion and environmental conservation. The Administration is carefully monitoring the environmental impact of coastal tourism and has taken steps to promote tourism in a way that is consistent with ecological concerns. As an effective strategy to avoid pressure on ecological environment, the efforts to promote tourism have been synchronized with the carrying capacity of the islands.

Lakshadweep History

Early history of Lakshadweep is unwritten. What now passes for history is based on various legends. Local traditions attribute the first settlement on these islands to the period of Cheraman Perumal, the last king of Kerala. It is believed that after his conversion to Islam, at the behest of some Arab merchants, he slipped out of his capital Cranganore, the present day Kodungallor - an old harbour town Kochi, for Mecca. When his disappearance was discovered, search parties went after him in sailing boats and left for the shores of Mecca, in search of the king from different places. It is believed that one of these sailing boats of Raja of Cannanore was struck by a fierce storm and they were shipwrecked on the island now known as Bangaram. From there they went to the nearby island of Agatti. Finally the weather improved and they returned to the mainland sighting other islands on their way. It is said that after their return another party of sailors and soldiers discovered the island of Amini and started living there. It is believed that the people sent there were Hindus. Even now unmistakable Hindu Social stratification exists in these islands despite Islam. Legends say that small settlements started in the Islands of Amini, Kavaratti, Andrott and Kalpeni first and later people from these islands moved to the other islands of Agatti, Kiltan, Chetlat and Kadmat.

Though the islands of Lakshadweep is small in terms of area, still when it comes to its lifestyle and rich cultural heritage the island stands apart in its diversity. This diverse and multifaceted culture makes us bewildered and astonishes us gasping for more. Though Islam is the dominant religion followed in Lakshadweep, other religions are also prevalent here. The culture of Lakshadweep is highly influenced by the neighboring state Kerala therefore these two places are unmistakably similar to each other. Lakshadweep being home to major tribal communities, the people lead a simple lifestyle and is acknowledged for their unique rituals and celebrations. The main working community of Lakshadweep is the Melacheris while the Koyas belong to the superior land owners. The Malmis are meant to be the sailor community. It can be said that Lakshadweep people are a true manifestation of cultural unification and social enrichment. The most commonly spoken language by the people of Lakshadweep is Malayalam.The culture of the people of Lakshadweep has got a historical link with the state of Kerala when it comes to it music and dance. Also the music and dance of the people of this island can be seen to be highly influenced by Islamic culture. Any social or religious festival is accompanied by the tribal music and colorful tribal dances. There are folk songs for every special occasion like marriage, birth, ear boring, death, etc.

Minicoy Island

The Minicoy Island is the southern-most island of Lakshadweep, situated at a distance of 398 km (215 nautical miles) south-west of Kochi between 8° 15' and 8° 20' N latitude and 73° 01' and 73° OS' E longitude, having an area of 4.80 sq km. This island lies near the 9 0 Channel, which is one of the busiest shipping routes and is about 130 km from the northern-most island of Maldives.

Lakshadweep has a tropical climate and it has an average temperature of 27° C - 32° C. April and May are the hottest with an average temperature of 32° C Generally the climate is humid warm and pleasant. As the climate is equitable during monsoons, ship-based tourism is closed.
